Anime Club Basics

Anime is super-fun and crazy popular. Consider starting a club celebrating anime at your library and be prepared to make some non-library users incredibly happy.

The very basic Anime Club is simple: just show some awesome anime shows. Your choices are quite expansive and with the two main streaming options you have some good resources at your disposal.

Streaming Options

  1. Crunchyroll offers a free library account that is super easy to use. All you have to do is have at least one showing per quarter and send them your feedback after each one (headcount, ages, etc.). Visit Crunchyroll (click here) for more detailed information.
  2. FUNimation also does pretty good working with libraries if you reach out. Submit a request to them through their support request and they seem quick to respond. Many of their shows can be screened with Movie Licensing USA/SWANK.

Other Activities:

  • Making candy sushi
  • Making buttons of your favorite anime characters
  • Anime drawing tutorials (bonus if they design and then turn that into a button)
  • Cosplay
  • Ramen eating contest (make Naruto proud). Or just eat ramen (I just warm up the crock pot with vegetable broth and/or water and cook as needed throughout the program).
  • Eat some Japanese goodies. Pocky is available most places and I totally recommend Bokksu if you want to explore the regions even more.

Tips:

  • Pre-screen or do your research ahead of time to make sure it is suitable for your audience. No Flying, No Tights has some fantastic breakdowns of many shows and is a great place to start. They also have a custom list from back in 2016 with suggestions for library anime clubs.
