SLP 2021: Easiest Basket Upcycle

Basket Upcycle

I imagine we are not the only library to have these baskets lying around. Or some variation of the plain, plastic variety.

Supply Photo Basket and Elastic Cord

We decided we would use this as a great time to plan on sending home something simple that they can upscale into a new personable style with very little materials (translation: inexpensive).

Supplies:

Basket (these were part of a 3-pack at Walmart for $.96)

Elastic Cord (we were going for animal print or something to tie in with the Tails & Tales summer theme of animals-we used some from Cousin DIY that we had on hand, but here's another option from them) *We are guessing regular ribbon would work just fine as well and if anyone tries this before I get the chance please let us know how it worked.*

All the Steps

Start weaving the cord through. Our sample used the entire length of 1.5 m from the Zebra print.

When you get to a corner, cheat your way above your first row.

Moving to next row

Overlay each row just a bit to make it easier to thread through. We will fan them out at the end.

Overlay the cord

With the end pieces, you can either cut them or-what we did-keep threading it through or behind the other pieces. It makes tight enough that it won't come loose without help.

Trim excess or keep weaving so it is underneath

Then fan out your overlapping cord.

And done! The end product is simple, but effective. This would also make a great back to school craft for teens; market it as a locker basket, give them a couple of command hooks and use the long and narrow basket.
