SLP 2021: Oil Pastel Animals

In preparing for the summer, we are trying to look at options that will work either in-person or virtually (or in the case of craft as Grab & Go). But let's be honest, the odds of us being in-person this summer seem very, very remote.

Now that the sadness is out, let's press on.

But we are also looking at what supplies we already have in abundance. Which for us is a random stack of matte boards. We don't recall where these came from, but we have held onto them for years. Because you just never know. So I decided to combine these with some oil pastels. And I love the result!

Supplies:

Oil Pastels

Matte, Canvas, Paper, Board, etc. (very versatile)

Stencils (optional)-I used FolkArt Stencils-Kids Room Decor Variety

This craft is super easy for in-person programming, but we think will only take some minor tweaks to send home.

For the pastels we will most likely find a classroom pack so we can send home a sampling of colors.

Then we will send whatever surface we have in abundance. It might be that various teens are getting different options, but I think that's fine.

Now for the stencil dilemma. Here's your choices:

  1. Skip them and let them freehand.
  2. Send them each a stencil and let them keep it.
  3. Send them a stencil on loan and request they return it. Know that there will be probably about 10% that you will not get back.
  4. Trace a basic shape on the surface in the library before you send it out.

Otherwise, the craft steps themselves are simple.

Gather your supplies.

Entertain your small crafting buddy because a 3-year-old does not understand that sometimes Mama has colors out for herself.

Trace your outline and fill it in.

Add any additional decor elements and you're done.
